Sincere thanks to Gsimenas for providing some of the transcriptions and translations for the doujinshi version of Sugary Days! This release wouldn’t have been possible without him. (Little fun fact if you didn’t know already: Gsimenas actually used to manually transcribe every raw for his translations, without the help of OCR… The guy is really built different). I will unfortunately only be doing a comparison of parts 9 to 13 of the volume, for which I have a proper transcription of the doujinshi. The Material Editions and the compilation book have never received any digital release, and manually retranscribing them in their entirety would take way too long. (OCR isn’t an option either as it’d introduce too many false positives, which would waste even more time)

【Translation & Review】 Sword Art Online: Material 1 – Sugary Days

Before proceeding to the volume’s content, I’d like to briefly explain the novel’s creation.
As most of you probably know, SAO originally began as a serialized web-novel on my personal website from 2002-2009. Alongside the main series, I also published short stories in the form of doujinshi at conventions, under the “SAO Material Edition” title. Since the main story existed as a digital web-novel, I considered the doujins as a “material”, physical version.
In 2009, I made my commercial debut under Dengeki Bunko with Accel World, during which the Alicization arc also concluded. This is when SAO was also commercialized as a light novel series, and when I stopped updating my website. However, even after getting licensed, I still continued to write Sword Art Online doujinshi, most of which were standalone short stories, which were later compiled in the “Sword Art Online Material Edition: Remix” mook published by Straight Edge.

Afterwards, in October 2012, I began publishing a story through several doujinshi, which would later come to be known as “Sugary Days”. The series would reach its (first) conclusion in 2015, when Sugary Days was compiled into a single bonus volume included in the “Sword Art Online II Vol. 5” BD/DVD release, after revising and expanding on the original script. After that, I thought I was done with Sugary Days, but after running out of ideas for new doujinshi, I began writing a sequel to “Sugary Days”. Three years later, in May 2018, I released a bunko-format compilation.
Everything was finally over… or so I thought.

Time continued to pass, and now we’ve reached 2026. SAO continues to simultaneously release with both the present “Unital Ring” arc, and the past’s “Progressive” arc. To my own surprise, the Dark Elf kingdom, Lyusula, became an important keystone in both arcs.

When you think of elves, most people naturally think of trees; as a result, the role of wood and woodworking in both Aincrad and Unital Ring will become much more significant going forward, both of which will properly introduce these elements. Since wood also plays an important role in “Sugary Days”, and features the series’ one and only Grandmaster Woodworker, I felt this was the perfect time to finally make “Sugary Days” accessible to all readers. After discussing the idea with my editor and the editorial department, we received the green light to finally publish Sugary Days under the main Dengeki Bunko label!

As a side note, the “Material” in the title is obviously a tribute to the good old “Material Edition” doujinshi. As for why this novel is also numbered ‘1’… I’ll leave it to your imagination!

Now then, since I’ve spent quite a while explaining the novel’s creation, let’s finally talk about its content.

Sugary Days depicts the first half of the two short weeks of Kirito and Asuna’s marriage in Aincrad. This occurs after Kirito’s proposal, appearing in Vol. 1 of the main series; and their first day after moving into their log-cabin, told in the short story, “The Day Before”. The latter half of their married life is covered in “Morning Dew Girl” from Vol. 2, and their final day is depicted in Vol. 1 once again. With Sugary Days’ release, we’ve finally almost covered the entirety of their honeymoon in detail.

(Though strictly speaking, there are still two days left unaccounted for… but I doubt I’ll ever write about them… probably.)

The first half of this volume is just as sweet as its title suggests, and I hope you’ll all please enjoy it! Since this was released as a doujinshi, I originally went “all out” while writing. I considered toning it down for its official label release to keep its content more suitable for younger audiences, but decided against it. I thought about how I’d feel as a reader, and complain about “censorship” and say things like “Why’d you nerf the story?!”, so I ultimately decided against it, and to only polish my writing. Even as I’m writing this afterword, I still don’t know what scenes will get illustrations, so I’m very excited to see how much abec decides to step on the gas pedal!

Meanwhile, the second half of the volume revolves around trees. Trees have always been an important cornerstone of Aincrad. The months are named after trees (i.e. September is the Month of Hazel, and October the Month of Japanese Ash), and there’s also the Legend of the Elven Sacred Tree. However, the main story never had much opportunity to explore the legend in detail, and I always wanted to expand on it if given the opportunity… though that opportunity ending up as a doujinshi is an entirely different matter (lol).

Wooden weapons and critical hits become major themes in the latter half of the story. I briefly introduced the group of players devoted to pursuing this specific play-style during Progressive’s Floor 6 arc, the so-called “Critlers”, but this volume finally allows us to take a much closer look at who they really are. Their leader, Mahokl, leader of the guild “Kaishindou” (also known as the “Critlers”), whose player name is inspired by varieties of woods like mahogany, teak, and walnut woods, clearly loved wood enough that she intended to devote herself entirely to woodworking at first. However, somewhere along the way, she became completely obsessed with critical hits instead.

As an MMO player myself, I find that quite relatable. More than once, the build I originally set to farm ended up becoming something completely different before I even realized it (lol)! If SAO had continued all the way to Floor 100 instead of ending on Floor 75, perhaps we could have seen her having mastered the Unique Skill, “Critical Strike”, obtained by landing repeated critical hits with wooden weapons. In that scenario, we might have seen a crazy scene with the nine Unique Skill users standing side-by-side before Demon Lord Heathcliff: Kirito with “Dual Blades,” Mahokl with “Critical Strike”, and all the others lined up! Thinking about that makes me feel just a little disappointed, but I hope I get an opportunity to write an “IF” story about that someday.

However, before that, I need to keep moving the main story forward. I’ll keep doing my best!

- 主街区を飛び出した俺たちは、街道を無視して深い森の中に飛び込んだ。当然ながら次々と虫系や獣系、植物系のモンスターにターゲットされるが無視してダッシュする。避けられそうにない奴は攻撃するしかないが、俺とアスナのレベルが９０を超えているのに対して、ここは適正レベル１０そこそこの三層だ。右手の愛剣エリュシデータ＋４５で一撫でするだけで、モンスターたち呆気なく四散していく。
- マップが正しく機能しない《迷い霧の森》を最短距離で突っ切った俺たちが、広大なフロアを南北に横切る山脈に到達したのはズムフトを出発してからわずか十五分後だった。攻略当時は一日がかりだったのだから隔世の感があるが、いまはノスタルジーに浸っている場合ではない。
- 山脈の西側には切り立った谷が口を開けていて、ここを通らないとがフロアの北部に繋がる唯一の通路だは行けない。すぐ近くの湖畔には小さな村があって美味い魚料理が食えるのだが、残念ながら寄り道している時間はない。
